It's so easy to fall in the trap of staring at the blank page for hours without knowing what to do. You're itching to create, but your little evil Creative Genius seems to give you nothing. Although, most of the times is out of fear, sometimes, it can be because the little guy is out of ideas. Since those days of feeling blank are so common in the life of an artist, I've put together my favorite ways to stimulate my Creative Genius in order to always have its juices flowing.
Here are 5 ways on how to (frequently) spark your Creative Genius and come up with ideas:
KEEP TRACK OF YOUR THOUGHTS: Most thoughts are a reaction to what we see, feel, taste, and hear; learn about the way you perceive the world and what gets you inspired by writing, drawing, scribbling, recording, anything that comes into your head as a response to your experiences and make it a routine. Keeping track of your thoughts on a daily basis will not only help you discover a pattern about your interests, but also, to have a never ending source of ideas for when you think you are out of them.
BE RECEPTIVE TO THE WORLD: As artists, in order to create, we need to have raw material, and raw material only comes from living a little. On your day-to-day, work/school, relationships, travels, experiences, stay present and be ready to receive those moments that can become more than just a memory, question it, what can I make out of this event? The more you allow yourself to live, the more stimulate it you will be. Genuine ideas do not come from others, they come from within. Feed your soul with experiences to keep your Creative Genius inspired.
RESEARCH: Having a big idea about a subject you know very little is an advantage when it comes to inspiration, and, a great opportunity to learn something new. Research will give you perspective and widen your horizons to new possible scenarios for your subject of matter. While documenting yourself, pay attention to the little details, these will fill the gaps of what you don't know about the topic you want to create from and give you the elements necessary to devise a meaningful piece.
MOOD BOARDS: Mood boards are perfect to keeping your Creative Genius consistent. Besides being a great fountain of inspiration, mood boards set the aesthetic for what you are currently into. Having an idea is the beginning of a project, dedicating time to develop it and get to know it will make the work better and it will stimulate your brain to keep coming up with new concepts you can create from. The key to be frequently inspired is to keep your brain stimulated with fresh information.
GO FOR A WALK: Yep, that simple. Go for a walk. Disconnect yourself from everything and let your brain go everywhere it wants to go, because it will go to A LOT of places if you give it that freedom. Notice every ramble and how it develops. Let it do its thing and when you can, record the thoughts that could be useful for current or future projects.
Now go set a day of the week to block down brainstorming sessions to start developing your new ideas!
